The world of beer has undergone a seismic shift in recent years, with the term “craft beer” rising to prominence as a symbol of quality, creativity, and authenticity. Yet, this term has also become a battleground, as large international brewers increasingly adopt it to market their mass-produced offerings. For breweries like Batemans, a fourth-generation family-run operation, this trend represents both a challenge and an opportunity to reaffirm the essence of true craftsmanship.
What exactly defines a craft beer? For some, it’s the hop-forward flavours or unique recipes. For others, it’s the small-batch production or the dedication to traditional brewing methods. Yet, as the term becomes more ubiquitous, it also becomes harder to pin down. Large brewers have seized upon this ambiguity, using the “craft” label to market beers that are, in reality, mass-produced. This practice has left many drinkers confused and some feeling misled.
“It’s not really about the label,” says Stuart Bateman. “What matters is the quality, authenticity, and passion behind the beer. Unfortunately, the commercialization of the term ‘craft’ has diluted its meaning.”
In response to this dilution, the term “Indie” has emerged as a way to distinguish beers brewed by genuinely independent breweries. Unlike “craft,” which has become a marketing buzzword, “Indie” carries a more straightforward implication: independence from corporate ownership. However, there’s a growing concern that even this term may be co-opted by larger players in the industry.
“It’s only a matter of time before some clever marketeers find a way to spin ‘Indie’ to their advantage,” Stuart warns. “But for now, it’s a helpful way to identify beers that come from truly independent breweries.”
The distinction between independent and corporate breweries isn’t just about semantics; it has real implications for the beer itself. Independent breweries are often more focused on the longevity of their operations, the quality of their products, and the wellbeing of their employees and customers. In contrast, large corporate brewers prioritize shareholder returns, often at the expense of these other values.
“When a company’s primary goal is maximizing shareholder profits, everything else takes a back seat,” explains Stuart. “This includes the quality of the beer, the authenticity of the brewing process, and the livelihoods of the people who brew them.”
For Batemans, independence means the freedom to prioritize craftsmanship over cost-cutting. Their motto, “Beers Brewed by Brewers, not Accountants,” encapsulates this philosophy. “Our goal isn’t to strip all the costs out of our beers, it’s to create something we’re proud of, something our customers will love.”
Batemans’ commitment to quality is rooted in a long tradition of family brewing. Founded in 1874, the brewery is now in its fourth generation of Bateman family ownership, with the fifth generation preparing to join the business. This continuity has allowed previous generations to pass down skills and traditions, ensuring that every pint of Batemans beer reflects over a century of expertise.
“The definition of craft is about skills passed down from generation to generation,” Stuart explains. “For us, that’s indisputable and why our slogan, ‘Craft Brewers Since 1874,’ so meaningful.”
As the beer industry continues to evolve, Batemans remains steadfast in its commitment to authenticity and independence. They are wary of how terms like “craft” and “Indie” might be redefined in the future but are determined to stay true to their values.
“We’ll keep doing what we’ve always done: brewing great beer with care and passion, no matter how the landscape changes, that’s something that will never go out of style.”
For drinkers seeking genuine craftsmanship in their beer, Batemans offers a reassuring reminder of what “craft” truly means. In a market increasingly dominated by marketing spin, this independent brewery stands as a beacon of tradition, quality, and authenticity—values that have sustained them for over 150 years.
