Batemans Brewery Collaborates with Urban South for JD Wetherspoon’s Autumn Beer Festival
As part of JD Wetherspoon’s Autumn Beer Festival, Batemans Brewery is thrilled to announce an exciting transatlantic collaboration. Kyle Huling, co-founder of Urban South Brewery in New Orleans, Louisiana, has partnered with Batemans to produce a cask version of their best-selling Golden Ale, Who Dat, exclusively for the festival.
Who Dat, traditionally brewed in New Orleans with a hybrid yeast strain and cold conditioned before packaging, is being reimagined for the UK beer scene. For this special cask version, Batemans has used its own house yeast for fermentation while maintaining the original malt bill of lager malt and flaked barley. The same blend of Citra and Hallertau Blanc hops has been used to preserve the brew’s distinctive flavour profile, which features smooth, juicy notes of fragrant lemongrass, green grape, and grapefruit.
Kyle Huling shared his enthusiasm for the collaboration, highlighting the cultural significance of Who Dat in New Orleans. The name stems from the local dialect, where “Who Dat” has become an iconic greeting and chant. “It’s amazing to work in a 150-year-old brewery like Batemans and experience open fermentation,” Huling said, reflecting on the unique brewing processes employed in this collaboration.
Batemans Head Brewer, Buster Grant, expressed excitement about the experimental brew, noting the mix of traditional and new techniques involved. “Some of the processes are very different from a classic Batemans brew, but the initial results are looking and tasting fantastic,” Grant said.
The cask version of Who Dat will make its debut at JD Wetherspoon pubs nationwide during the Autumn Beer Festival. Beer enthusiasts are encouraged to keep an eye out for this one-of-a-kind brew.
